Landmark, Monument and Bridge Lighting

Landmark lighting gives a bridge, monument or statue a night time form of its own, using light aimed at the structure rather than at the space around it.
GS LIGHT manufactures the fixtures these schemes use: wall washers, inground uplights, floods, linear and flexible neon, in IP66 to IP68 housings with 316 stainless steel fixings and DMX512 control. Recommendations start from the structure, the viewing distances and the local rules on obtrusive light.

Why Landmark Lighting Matters

01

A landmark works at three distances

A bridge is read from the far bank at 500 meters, from the approach road at 50 meters and from the handrail at arm's length. The same scheme has to hold up at all three, which is why one flood pointed at a structure rarely succeeds.

02

Public structures sit in public reach

Fixtures on a promenade or a plaza get kicked, climbed on and washed down. IK08 and IK10 housings, 316 stainless fixings and concealed cable routes are specified so the scheme survives its first summer.

03

Water and salt shorten fixture life

River spray, coastal air and de icing salt attack fasteners and gaskets faster than rain does. GS LIGHT runs 500 hour salt spray testing on fixtures for marine sites, including the units supplied to The Anchor at Dubai Harbour. Ask for the report to see the test standard, the sample tested and the pass criteria.

316 stainless steel fixings are recommended for marine, coastal, tidal and high chloride environments, and anywhere de icing salt is used.

04

Cities regulate what you can light

Most authorities restrict upward light and set curfew hours. CIE 150 groups sites into environmental zones from E1, dark rural areas, to E4, city centers, with tighter limits at the dark end. Design to the zone before the aesthetics.

Landmark Lighting Solutions by Structure

Volgograd Waterfront Park Lighting Project in Russia

Bridge Decks, Walkways and Handrails

Design objective

Light the surface people walk and drive on, and give the bridge a visible line from a distance, without dazzling anyone crossing it.

Starting point optics

20 to 50 lux on a pedestrian deck. Handrail mounted linear or neon at low output carries the line; keep the source out of the eye line by mounting under the rail or behind a shield.

Professional recommendations

Put the deck scheme on its own circuit, so the crossing stays lit when the display is off. Handrail runs come from the flexible neon range in dual bend silicone. Use warm 2700K to 3000K where the structure is stone or steel and the city has no color policy.

Bridge Structure: Arches, Cables and Trusses

Design objective

Show the engineering that gives the bridge its shape. An even wash across the whole span hides it.

Starting point optics

3° to 15° narrow floods from deck level or the pier base to reach an arch crown 30 meters up. Grazing along a truss picks out the lattice; flat washing flattens it.

Professional recommendations

Aim from two positions so the structure keeps depth, and check the aiming from the far bank, not from beside the fixture. RGBW is worth specifying where the city actually programs scenes for events; a fixed warm scheme reads better than a badly programmed color one. See the wall washer lights range for spans and piers.

Piers, Abutments and Water Line

Design objective

Anchor the structure visually where it meets the water, and handle the wettest, dirtiest position in the scheme.

Starting point optics

Wide 60° or asymmetric optics close to the surface, with fixtures above the flood line wherever the hydrology allows.

Professional recommendations

use IP67 or higher at ground level and in heavy spray zones, and specify IP68 only where actual submersion is expected. Where IP68 is specified, confirm the permitted immersion depth and duration for that fixture, since the rating alone does not state them. Keep drivers in an accessible enclosure at deck level, clear of the water line.

Monuments, Statues and Memorials

Design objective

Model the form so it reads as three dimensional, and keep light off the faces of people standing at the base.

Starting point optics

Two or three narrow beams at 10° to 24° from different angles, with the brightest from the primary viewing direction. Inground fixtures at 1 to 3 meters out suit most statues; larger monuments need floods from further back.

Professional recommendations

Cross light the form at a slight angle, so shadow gives it shape. Bronze and dark stone need more light than pale marble for the same apparent brightness, which is where a mock up pays for itself.

Historic Walls, City Gates and Ramparts

Design objective

Reveal masonry texture along a long elevation without a row of visible hot spots.

Starting point optics

Grazing from 150 to 300 mm off the face for texture, or washing from further back for an even surface. Linear fixtures give continuity that spot fixtures cannot.

Professional recommendations

Heritage sites usually restrict fixing into historic fabric. Plan for free standing or ground mounted positions, reversible fixings and concealed cable routes, and agree the approach with the conservation officer before ordering. The same optics appear on the building facade lighting page for building elevations.

Towers, Spires and Clock Faces

Design objective

Carry light to the top of a tall element from a position people cannot see.

Starting point optics

3° to 10° floods from ground level or a lower roof, aimed to hit the top third hardest, since the eye reads the crown as the landmark.

Professional recommendations

Check spill against neighboring windows and the sky at the same time. A clock face or dial needs its own low level treatment; the flood that lights the tower behind it will wash the dial out.

Plazas, Promenades and Viewing Points

Design objective

Light the public space around the landmark so the structure stays the brightest thing in view.

Starting point optics

20 to 50 lux on paths and plazas, kept below the level on the structure itself. Bollards and side emitting inground fixtures light the surface without adding glare.

Professional recommendations

The space should read as darker than the monument, otherwise the landmark loses its place in the composition. Use LED bollard lights at 400 mm to 800 mm along routes, and keep the color temperature consistent with the structure lighting.

Waterfront Walls and River Frontage

Design objective

Hold a continuous line along a quay or embankment that reads from the opposite bank.

Starting point optics

Linear wall washers or neon along the wall head, with 10x60° or 20x45° asymmetric optics where the fixture sits close to the face.

Professional recommendations

Specify for salt and constant humidity, and keep every fixture reachable from land, since boat access multiplies the cost of each visit. GS LIGHT supplied this type of scheme at the Volgograd waterfront park in Russia, on the waterfront park lighting project.

Levels follow common practice for pedestrian areas and civic structures. Local authority rules and CIE 150 environmental zones take priority, so confirm both before fixing quantities.
Professional Guidance

Professional Landmark Lighting Design Recommendations

Six principles. The first carries the standard and is written to be quotable.

Design to the environmental zone first

CIE 150 sorts sites into four environmental zones, from E1 dark rural to E4 city center, and each sets limits on upward light, spill onto windows and luminaire intensity. A monument in a village and the same monument in a city center take different equipment. Confirm the zone and any curfew hour with the authority before the concept is fixed.

Light the structure, not the sky

Aim fixtures so the beam lands on the form and stops there. Shields, louvers and correctly chosen optics do more for a scheme than dimming does, and they keep the light where the money was spent.

Model the form, do not flatten it

One bright source from the front removes the depth that makes a monument worth lighting. Two or three beams from different angles, with one dominant, give the shape back. Grazing does the same job for texture on walls and ramparts.

Respect the material

Pale marble reflects several times more light than dark bronze or weathered stone, so identical fixtures give very different results. Sample on the actual surface before committing quantities, especially on heritage material that cannot be cleaned or altered.

Plan the scenes and the curfew together

A civic scheme usually needs a standard evening scene, a reduced late night level, a curfew state and an event scene. DMX512 handles this cleanly. Agree who holds the controller and who is allowed to change it, because that question surfaces after handover otherwise.

Specify for maintenance from land

Fixtures over water or at height cost more to reach than to replace. Group them where access equipment can stand, keep drivers in serviceable enclosures, and choose IP and material ratings that put the access schedule in years.

Our Landmark Lighting Design Process

01

Project analysis

We review drawings, elevations and photographs, the viewing positions that matter, the materials, the mounting positions available and the environmental zone.

02

Lighting concept

We agree what the scheme should reveal, the color temperature or color policy, the scenes and the curfew behavior.

03

Product and optics selection

We match wall washers, inground fixtures, floods, linear and neon to each element, with the IP, IK and material specification the site demands.

04

Photometric simulation and mock up

We produce calculations for the main elevations and recommend a night time mock up on the structure, which is the only reliable way to judge a monument.

05

Installation and commissioning support

We supply mounting, aiming and DMX addressing documentation, and stay available through aiming nights and handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use two or three narrow beams from different angles, with one dominant, so the form keeps its depth. Beam angles of 10° to 24° suit most statues, mounted 1 to 3 meters out at ground level. Aim slightly across the form rather than straight at it, and sample on the real material before ordering.

IP66 for exposed positions, IP67 where ground water and spray reach, and IP68 where a fixture can be submerged. Add 316 stainless steel fixings on coastal and river sites, since fasteners usually fail before the housing does. Ask for salt spray test results on marine projects.

Grazing puts the fixture close to the surface so light rakes across it and raises texture; washing sits further back and lights the surface evenly. Use grazing on stone, brick and ramparts where the relief is the feature, and washing on smooth abutments, panels and quay walls.

CIE 150 sets four environmental zones, E1 dark rural through E4 city center, and authorities use them to cap upward light, spill onto windows and luminaire intensity, normally with a curfew hour. Design to the zone from the start. Shields, louvers and the right optic control spill better than dimming after the fact.

Yes. RGBW fixtures on DMX512 hold a standard scene and switch to event colors for national days or civic occasions. Keep the everyday scheme in white and treat color as the exception; a fixed warm scheme usually reads better than a color scheme nobody maintains. Agree who holds the controller before handover.

A bridge carries three lighting systems that do different jobs: deck or roadway lighting for traffic and pedestrians, navigation lighting for vessels and aircraft, and architectural or feature lighting on the structure itself. GS LIGHT supplies pedestrian and roadway luminaires and architectural feature lighting. Navigation and obstruction lighting is regulated equipment, specified by the waterway or aviation authority, and sits outside our scope.

Yes. Custom lengths, finishes, optics and color temperatures are standard OEM and ODM work. One sports arena project took more than 4,000 wall washers in 14 lengths between 200 mm and 850 mm from a single drawing set. Send the drawing and we will quote the tooling and lead time with it.

Keep the deck lighting on its own circuit so the crossing stays lit when the display scheme is off, and group display fixtures where access equipment can stand. Drivers belong in serviceable enclosures at deck level, which keeps most maintenance on land.

GS LIGHT holds CE certificates by product line, TUV CB test reports and ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 factory certification, with a warranty of 3 or 5 years depending on the line. Test reports for each model come with the quotation, including IP, IK and salt spray results where the project needs them.

Elevations or photographs, the dimensions of the structure, the available mounting positions, the viewing directions and the environmental zone. With those we return a fixture schedule and a quotation within 24 hours, and a photometric layout once the drawings are confirmed.
