SGC Investments is a Zambia-based fuel and lubricant provider with a growing filling station network across Africa. Its business also includes grocery supermarkets, making clear and comfortable retail lighting an important part of the customer experience.

GS LIGHT developed an application-based lighting solution for the 30+ filling stations, matching each lighting type to the specific requirements of the forecourt, baldaquin, convenience store and architectural areas.
Solution:
Dedicated LED canopy lights were used for the forecourt to provide clear and consistent illumination across fueling areas and vehicle circulation zones.

Gas station lighting needs to meet the applicable electrical, safety and lighting requirements of the target market. Depending on the project location, specifications may cover ingress protection, electrical safety, photometric performance, surge protection and other requirements. The applicable standards should be confirmed during the project specification stage.
Outdoor fixtures at gas stations are exposed to rain, poussière, temperature changes and other environmental conditions. An appropriate IP rating should therefore be selected according to the installation location and local climate. For canopy and other exposed outdoor areas, IP65 or higher is commonly considered for projects requiring protection against dust and water.
Canopy lighting should be evaluated based on the required illuminance, hauteur de montage, canopy geometry, fixture spacing and optical distribution. Simply increasing fixture wattage does not necessarily produce better lighting. A suitable photometric layout helps achieve the required illumination while avoiding excessive brightness and unnecessary energy consumption.
A CRI of 80 or above is commonly suitable for general gas station and convenience store applications, while higher CRI may be preferred where accurate product colors and visual presentation are particularly important. The final specification should depend on the type of retail environment and the client's lighting objectives.
Energy efficiency depends on the complete lighting system rather than fixture wattage alone. High-efficiency LEDs, appropriate optical distribution, correct fixture spacing, suitable illumination levels and effective lighting controls can all contribute to lower energy consumption. For continuously operating facilities, these factors become particularly important over the lifetime of the installation.
