Hotel and Resort Lighting Solutions

Hotel and resort lighting starts outside. The facade, the entrance, the gardens, the pool and the paths decide how a property reads after dark, long before a guest reaches the lobby.
GS LIGHT supplies the architectural and exterior layer of a hotel or resort scheme, plus the lobby, restaurant, corridor and back of house fittings around it: wall washers, inground uplights, bollards, floods, neon, track and downlights. Decorative pieces such as chandeliers and bedside lamps come from the interior designer's own suppliers, and our fixtures are specified alongside them.

Why Hotel Lighting Matters

01

Arrival sets the brand

The facade and the porte cochere are the first brand contact after dark, often seen from 100 meters away on the approach road. Warm wall washing at 2700K to 3000K holds stone, render and timber close to their daytime color.

02

Resorts live outdoors

A resort spends most of its lighting budget outside: gardens, pools, villa paths and outdoor dining. Low bollards, shielded inground lights and 2700K to 3000K keep those areas usable after dark without lighting the sky.

03

Hotels run 24 hours

Corridors, stairs, back of house and car parks never switch off. Sensors, dimming scenes and a late night level cut those hours without a guest noticing.

04

The coast is harder than rain

Salt air and pool chemistry attack coatings and fasteners long before the LEDs wear out, and IP66 alone does not stop corrosion. Coastal properties need the rating, the coating system and 316 stainless fixings specified together.

Hotel Lighting Solutions by Area

Facade and Entrance Canopy

Facade and Entrance Canopy

Design objective

Give the building a readable shape from the approach, then lift the entrance so arriving guests move toward light.

Starting point optics

Linear wall washers at the base of the wall, 0.5 to 1.5 meters out, with 15° to 30° optics for 5 to 15 meter elevations and 10° to 15° above that. Narrow 5° to 15° floods pick out columns and towers. Canopy downlights at 3000K give 200 to 300 lux across the drop off, so the doorman, the luggage and the car door are all lit.

Professional recommendations

Keep light off the lower guest room windows. The 18+55° asymmetric optic pushes the beam up the wall instead of into the room, and a late night scene at 30% keeps the building visible without lighting an empty street.

Lobby and Reception

Design objective

Light the desk for the transaction and the faces, then let the rest of the room fall away so the space reads as a lounge.

Starting point optics

300 lux at the reception desk under EN 12464-1, with lounge and seating areas held lower at 100 to 200 lux so the desk reads as the destination. 2700K to 3000K with CRI 90 or higher, since faces, stone and timber are what guests see here.

Professional recommendations

Light the desk front and the faces behind it with a low glare downlight or track head, never a bare source in the guest's eye line. Put the lounge, the art and the feature walls on their own DALI groups, so the lobby can step down after 11pm while the desk stays at working level.

Corridors, Lifts and Stairs

Design objective

Move guests to their rooms without glare, and meet the emergency requirement without an obvious emergency fitting.

Starting point optics

100 lux at floor level under EN 12464-1, with the light on the walls and doors rather than the carpet. Keep the same 2700K to 3000K as the guest rooms so the transition is invisible.

Professional recommendations

Wall lighting flatters a narrow corridor; a row of downlights down the center makes it feel like a tunnel. Corridors run 24 hours, so this is the first place to put a late night dim level. Emergency battery packs run up to 90 minutes on selected series.

Landscape, Driveway and Pathways

Design objective

Guide guests from the drive to the door and along garden and villa paths, and give the planting a shape after dark without lighting the sky.

Starting point optics

10 to 20 lux on garden and villa paths, 20 to 50 lux at steps, entrances and the drive. Bollards at 400 mm to 800 mm along routes, and narrow 10° to 24° optics to uplight palms and tall trees, with wider 40° to 60° for shrubs and low planting.

Professional recommendations

Use low, shielded bollards where guests walk and keep the source below eye level, because a bright lens at one meter is what spoils a garden at night. Aim tree uplights away from balconies and guest room windows, and put the landscape on a timer with a late night level so the grounds stay safe after midnight. Bollards at 400 mm to 600 mm suit villa and garden paths; save 800 mm for service routes and car park edges.

Restaurant, Bar and Function Rooms

Design objective

Let one room work as a breakfast service at 8am and a bar at 10pm.

Starting point optics

50 to 150 lux in dining areas depending on the concept, with accent light on tables and the bar back. Function rooms need a scene set that covers conference at 300 to 500 lux, dining, and presentation with the screen wall dark.

Professional recommendations

Put the contrast on the table and the food, not on the whole ceiling. Dimming needs to be smooth to 1% or guests see the steps, and every scene should be recallable from a wall panel so a duty manager can set the room without calling anyone.

Pool, Water Features and Beachfront

Design objective

Make the pool deck and water features usable after dark, in fixtures that survive chlorine, salt air and standing water.

Starting point optics

20 to 50 lux on the pool deck from side emitting inground lights and low bollards. Uplight feature walls and palms with 3° to 15° optics from a distance and 60° close in. IP67 in the ground and at the pool edge; IP68 only where a fixture sits under water, with the permitted immersion depth confirmed for that model.

Professional recommendations

Pool chemistry and salt air are harder on a fixture than rain. On coastal sites, specify 316 stainless steel fixings, the coating system and the gasket material together, and ask for electrophoretic pretreatment under the powder coat. Keep drivers out of wet zones, and every fixture reachable without draining the pool.

Back of House

Design objective

Light kitchens, laundry, stores and plant rooms to the level the work needs, in fittings that survive cleaning.

Starting point optics

500 lux on kitchen preparation surfaces under EN 12464-1, 200 to 300 lux in stores and corridors, 4000K throughout so the contrast with the guest areas is obvious to staff.

Professional recommendations

Kitchens and laundries need sealed fittings that take a hose and a detergent wipe. IP65 covers most rooms; IP69K suits wash down areas. Tri proof fittings with UGR below 19 keep glare down for staff working long shifts under a low ceiling. See LED tri proof lights for the sealed range.

Parking and Approach

Design objective

Get guests from the car to the door feeling safe, and make the entrance visible from the road.

Starting point optics

75 lux in covered parking, 20 to 50 lux on approach roads, with vertical light at the lift lobby and pay station so faces are recognizable.

Professional recommendations

Uniformity matters more than average level here; a bright pool of light next to a dark bay is worse than a consistent medium level. Light the lower level parking with 1.2 meter tri proof fittings at 20W to 40W on microwave sensors, which hold a low level in empty bays and lift to full output when a car or a guest arrives. The approach road takes street lights on poles, and bollards mark the pedestrian route without dazzling drivers.

Key Specifications for Hotel Lighting

Optical performance: narrow 5° to 15° optics for tall columns and long throws, 15° to 30° for architectural features and medium facade elements, and 30° to 60° or asymmetric optics for walls, entrances and general washing. Confirm the final optics with an IES simulation and a mock up on site.

Environmental rating: IP44 to IP65 under covered entrances, IP65 to IP66 on exterior walls and in planting, IP67 in the ground, IP67 or IP68 in water features depending on the installation, and IP20 indoors. On coastal sites, add a corrosion specification to the IP rating.

Control: DALI or 0 to 10V for public and back of house areas, DMX512 where the facade runs scenes. Static white suits most luxury, business and boutique hotels. RGBW scenes suit landmark hotels, resorts and event nights.

Professional Guidance

Professional Hotel Lighting Design Recommendations

Six key considerations to create a lighting design that enhances the guest experience and delivers long-term value.

Follow the guest route, not the floor plan

Walk the route a guest takes: approach road, drop off, door, desk, lift, corridor, room. Each handover should feel gradual. A bright canopy leading to a dim lobby makes the lobby look broken, however well the lobby measures on its own.

Treat the standard as the floor and the brand standard as the target

EN 12464-1 is a minimum, and most operators specify above it. Get the brand standard in writing before the layout, because a Marriott or Accor specification can change fixture count, CRI and control protocol after the design is signed off, and finding that out after sign off is expensive.

Budget the control system with the fixtures

Scenes, sensors and a wall panel the duty manager can actually use are the difference between a design that survives its first year and one that gets overridden to full output. Price the controls, the programming and the commissioning visit in the same budget line as the luminaires.

Commission at night with the operator present

Aiming, scene levels and late night settings can only be judged after dark, on site, with the person who will run the building. An hour of commissioning with the duty manager prevents the two complaints that follow every handover: a facade that lights the rooms and a lobby that feels dim at 11pm.

Plan scenes around the operating day

A practical set covers the operating day: sunset to 10pm at the full architectural scene, 10pm to midnight at 50 to 70%, late night at 20 to 30% with selected zones off, early morning cleaning at a working level, and an event or festive scene on its own program. Give the duty manager a wall panel rather than a laptop.

Specify for the maintenance crew

Ask how each fixture will be reached once the building is open. Anything over water, above a void or on a high facade should carry a higher IP rating and a longer warranty than the budget version, because the access cost dwarfs the fixture cost.

Our Hotel Lighting Design Process

01

Project analysis

We review elevations, floor plans, operating hours, the brand standard and the site conditions, including coastal exposure and pool chemistry.

02

Lighting concept

We agree the hierarchy zone by zone, the color temperatures, the scenes and the control approach with the designer or consultant.

03

Product and optics

We match series, wattages, beam distributions, finishes and control protocols to each area, and flag anything that needs a custom length or finish.

04

Simulation and mock up

With drawings we produce calculations for the key spaces, and we recommend a mock up on the facade or in a model room before a full order.

05

Quotation, production and commissioning

With the layout approved, we issue the BOQ and quotation, move to production, and supply documentation for mounting, aiming, DALI or DMX addressing and scene setting, then stay available through commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hotel needs four layers: architectural light on the building and grounds, functional light in circulation and back of house, task light at desks, mirrors and work surfaces, and decorative fixtures in guest facing rooms. GS LIGHT supplies the first three. Decorative pieces normally come through the interior designer's FF&E package.

EN 12464-1 sets 300 lux at the reception desk and 100 lux in hotel corridors. Lobby seating and lounge areas are usually held lower, around 100 to 200 lux, so the desk and the entrance read as the brightest points. Treat these as minimums: most operators' brand standards specify above them, so confirm the brand standard before the layout.

As starting points: 2700K to 3000K on the building exterior, 2200K to 3000K in the landscape, 2700K to 3500K in the lobby, 2400K to 3000K in restaurants, 2700K to 3000K in corridors, and 3000K to 4000K in parking and service areas. Final choices follow the facade materials, the brand positioning and the surroundings. Hold one temperature across any view a guest can take in at once.

No. GS LIGHT manufactures architectural, exterior and functional lighting: facade, landscape, downlights, track, linear, neon and sealed back of house fittings. Decorative and FF&E pieces come from specialist suppliers, and our fixtures are specified alongside them on the same project.

Keep the LED source out of direct view from the windows, use asymmetric optics such as the 18+55° distribution to push light up the wall, and add louvers or honeycomb baffles where fixtures sit close to glazing. Check the aiming from a second floor room, where complaints start, reduce output on the elevations nearest the rooms, and program a late night dim level.

IP67 or better in the ground and around water, IP66 on exposed walls, and 316 stainless steel fixings throughout. An IP rating on its own does not make a fixture suitable for the coast: it describes dust and water ingress, not corrosion. On a beachfront site, also check the housing alloy, the coating system, the gasket material and the fasteners. GS LIGHT can add electrophoretic pretreatment under the powder coat, the same treatment behind the 500 hour salt spray testing on fixtures for The Anchor, Dubai Harbour.

GS LIGHT holds CE certificates by product line, TUV CB test reports, and ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 factory certification, with a warranty of 3 or 5 years depending on the product line. Test reports for individual models are available with the quotation. For projects needing UL or ETL listing, ask before ordering.

Samples ship in 7 to 15 days and mass production runs 20 to 35 days, depending on specification and quantity. Custom finishes, lengths and color temperatures extend that, so send the specification early on a phased opening. Quotations come back within 24 hours of receiving drawings.
